Hydraulic Power Generation

The 921 earthquake result in a huge amount of debris along the river bed. Afterwards, Typhoon Toraji in 2001 and Typhoon Mindulle in 2004 brought heavy rain and mud slide. They caused severe damage on Kukuan hydro power plant and Ching shan hydro power plant respectively.

CHEM contracted the turkey projects for the 4 power generation units (221.2 MW) of Kukuan power plant in 2003 and 4 power generation units (384.52 MW) of Ching shan power plant) in 2012. All efforts are made to overcome the harsh traffic condition and environment and complete the projects.

Kukuan hydro power plant started operation in 2008, generating 528 million kWh per year. Ching shan hydro power plant started operation in 2015, generating 620 million kWh per year. They are generating total 1.148 billion kWh. It reduced 0.425 million ton coal consumption annually; that is 0.598million tons CO2 emission reduction, equivalent to 1, 548 times of Daan Forest ParkCO2 emission reduction.

After the 2 hydro power plant rehabilitation projectsare completed,Dachiachi River’sclean water resources can be used effectively, providing electricity power in Taiwan, stabilizing power frequency, adjusting peak electricity consumption and improving Taiwan Area power quality. The project team do their best on the works, implementing3-class quality control system to achieve high quality of the generation units.The performance is significantly better than the value of the contract specification. During construction, there is zero accidentsfor industrial safety and zero violation in environmental protection.It is a model of public works. Kukuan plant won the Executive Yuan branch the 9th goldenaward for public works facilities in 2008. Ching Shan plant won Executive Yuanthe 15th Goldenaward for Public Works in 2015 and Institute of Chineseengineers – Engineeringexcellent Award in 2015.

Taiwan government is vigorously promoting the development of green energy projects. CHEMcontinued with the direction of maximum renewable energy and actively participate in the activities of TaiwanPower Company and related units, using existing facilities and installing small hydro units.It can save plant and water diversion facilities costs, and effective use clean water resource, increasing power system capacity and improvingreservoiroperational efficiency. Through the development of environmentally friendly small hydro, we continued to inject new powerfor Taiwan.
